With cable and satellite companies dominating the world of television lately, it can be difficult to find ay alternative. With the price of programming as his as it is, as well, there’s a driving need for some people to find an unconventional entertainment source. The system is known as free-to-air, or FTA, and it requires only an FTA receiver in order to work properly. An FTA receiver is much like any other satellite or cable box. As with regular satellite and cable programming, also known as pay-to-view, or PTV, FTA programming has its share of commercials. Some commercials are actually donation requests; since there are no subscription fees for the FTA system, the providers of the service have only the sale of the FTA receiver and satellite to offset the costs of providing the free programming. These donation commercials give information on how to submit donations via phone and the internet.
The use of FTA receiver and satellites has been on the rise lately. The cost of traditional cable and satellite PTV programming has been getting more costly every year, mostly due to tax increases, the increased price of even the most basic programming packages, and the gas tax that some companies now add to offset the price of their company vehicles. Because the FTA system has been getting more and more use, however, it’s also been getting more and more criticism. Some see FTA programming as a threat to the PTV cable and satellite companies.
Whatever the future of FTA receivers and satellites, the reality is that there’s a no subscription cost alternative to tradition PTV satellite and cable systems.
