Facebook May Receive Up To $1.3 Billion In Advertising Revenue In 2010

Research carried out by eMarketer predicts that Facebook is in line to receive some $1.2 billion worth of advertising revenue this year. It is a sign of the continued growth within the online marketing sector, despite the general decline in the advertising industry throughout the recession.

While Facebook may basque in their financial glory, other sites such as MySpace do not have such a prosperous outlook ahead of them. The latter is expected to record a loss of over $50 million YOY.

With Facebook reaching the 500 million user mark earlier this year, it makes sense for advertisers to utilise this ever-growing source of consumers. However, it is not only the access to such a vast demographic that attracts the advertisers. Facebook represents a medium which has the capacity to provide a platform for highly personalised ad campaigns.

With the large amounts of individual data on hand to guide advertising companies, campaigns have the potential to be extremely user-specific, thus increasing the click-through and conversion rates of a particular advertising strategy.

Facebook is a PPC heaven, with the ability to aggregate a vast amount of data from an equally vast number of people. From their geographical location to their marital status, every chunk of information contributes towards a comprehensive understanding of a person, and the subsequent ability to target them with a good degree of accuracy.

The decline of MySpace may be a sad thought for many for whom the site was the dominant force of a generation. However, it is also believed the looming clouds forming over the MySpace camp may have a silver lining. It is believed to be necessary for MySpace to carve out a particular space of its own, as it is obviously no longer able to compete with the likes of Facebook.

It is against this backdrop that MySpace president Mike Jones has announced that the relaunch of its homepage will take place in the autumn of 2010.
