Facebook Updates From The Car That Speaks
The Rinspeed Bamboo is the first car to feature a fully voice-activated system that plugs into any smartphone or tablet device and opens it up to voice control while on the road. Compatible with Apple's iPhone and iPad as well as Android-based smartphones and tablets, and BlackBerry devices, the system relies on a simple USB-based charging connection between the device and the vehicle. The charging connection means your phone's battery won't drain quickly as you speak your way through Facebook links, Twitter mentions, and even text messages. And it means your car has full control over the device as you drive. Harman, which designed the system, notes that it's good for more than just Facebook or Twitter updates. As part of what the company calls the "first internet car," the USB connection allows you to browse the internet while you drive, too. Just tell the car which website you want to peruse, and it'll load the page and read you the content. If you happen to get a text message from one of your friends while you're driving or browsing the web, the system will give you the option to open the text message and have it read you while you drive. Harman, along with Rinspeed and its Bamboo electric vehicle, unveiled the technology at the Geneva Motor Show. It is expected that this revolutionary technology will be ready for inclusion in mainstream vehicles within the next 18 months. That means you can look forward to an internet-enabled vehicle by the end of 2013. If you can hold out that long until you trade in your internet-lacking vehicle for a new one, it might be a good investment. With many countries cracking down on what they term "distracted driving," this system could be just what motorists need to be able to be both productive and attentive. For those who don't need to watch the road and steer clear of other vehicles, the so-called "internet car" allows your smartphone or tablet device to turn its mobile broadband connection into a wireless hotspot. When you plug it into the car's included USB port, it will allow your phone to function as a wireless router, allowing your passengers to connect to the internet while you cruise down the freeway. Whether you're currently addicted to Facebook or Twitter, or would just like your car to read the New York Times to you as you speed past other drivers on your way to work, the internet car is an exciting prospect. Increasing numbers of accidents each year are attributed to so-called distracted driving -- drivers who are paying more attention to their SMS messages than to the road. Promoting a more internet-connected highway with fewer accidents is something everyone can get behind -- and tweet about.
