Fall Fun At The Chattahoochee Nature Center

The Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell, Georgia is a great place to visit in the fall. Visitors can enjoy some special seasonal activities as well as the nature center’s year round exhibits and offerings. The cooler weather makes hiking the trails more pleasant, and visitors can observe how some of the resident wildlife prepares for the approaching winter weather.

There are several interesting trails through the property. Visitors can take a quiet walk through a wooded area on the Forest Trail. The Kingfisher Pond Trail and the Beaver Pond Trail allow for a glimpse of some of the nature center’s wildlife. One of the most popular trails is the River Boardwalk Trail, which leads through marshy areas along the Chattahoochee River. Hikers often observe Canada geese, wood ducks, and great blue herons near this trail. Weekend visitors may participate in guided nature walks.

The nature center has several garden areas to explore. The Wetland Gardens have more than 200 species of native plants. The Butterfly Garden provides food sources for butterflies. Fresh produce is grown seasonally in the Unity Garden, and the Rooftop Garden is a unique example of green gardening. The Chattahoochee Nature Center is home to a variety of animals and birds. The ponds provide a habitat for beavers, fish, frogs, and toads. There are also some resident opossums, non-venomous snakes, and Eastern box turtles. The Raptor Aviary is home to several birds of prey that have been permanently injured and cannot survive in the wild. There are two bald eagles, owls, vultures, Cooper’s hawks, and red-shouldered hawks. The nature center is currently offering fall bird seed for sale. Inside the education building there are some excellent exhibits on watersheds and their importance to the environment.

The annual Back to Nature Holiday Market and Festival is scheduled for December 3 from 10am-4pm. Admission to this event is free. More than 20 vendors will be selling unique crafts and gifts. Some of the offerings will include jewelry, purses, scarves and other accessories, health and beauty products, pottery, paintings, and photography. There will be nature and wildlife related items including birdhouses, handcrafted wreaths, and holiday arrangements. Shoppers can come browse the displays and select their holiday gifts.
