Fame And Fortune Do Not Prevent Ear Noise And Tinnitus

Baby boomers are now entering the time of their lives when they start to have trouble with ear noises caused by tinnitus. For this generation, the problem of constant ringing in the ears due to this condition may be worse than for past generations because of the way they listened to music as they grew older. Can you say "loud?" In fact, very loud.

There's more and more reason to believe that years of exposure to loud music will result in hearing loss eventually. Just check out the list of "veteran" rock musicians who now have constant ringing in the ears and other ear noises caused by tinnitus.

Here's a partial list of rock and roll royalty who have admitted to having tinnitus and other hearing problems:

The Who's John Entwhistle and Pete Townshend. Townshend can no longer hear at all in one ear. His deafness is probably the result of high volume music and explosions that were part of their concert act, along with listening to super-amplified playback s during studio recording sessions.

Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood has been quoted in Rolling Stones Magazine as saying, "The world's worst is when you find yourself going like Mother Hubbard and cupping your hand behind your ear. I was a major glutton for volume: 'Gotta feel it, gotta hear it.' Sooner or later you're going to pay the reaper."

Others who have suffered at least partial hearing loss or related problems include George Harrison of the Beatles, Neil Young, Jeff Beck, Ted Nugent, Huey Lewis and Bono.

Rockers from other groups (Metallica, My Bloody Valentine, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers) now hear noises in their ears too.

Other Famous People Who Hear Constant Ringing in the Ears

Loud music is not the only hearing hazard among the well-known.

Both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy have tinnitus-like hearing problems suffered when a prop exploded on the set during the filming of a Star Trek episode more than 40 years ago.

Steve Martin, the actor and comedian, acquired tinnitus while filming a pistol-shooting scene in "¡Three Amigos!" in 1986.

Constant ringing in the ears has been a problem for some famous people for a long time - even before they became famous, in some cases.

Barbra Streisand has said her reputation for volatility may be the result of tinnitus or a similar hearing impairment which she has had since she was seven, according to news sources in the United Kingdom.

Actress Morgan Fairchild had scarlet fever when she was very young. She says she had so many kidney infections and ear infections as a child that she admits she is "partially deaf" as a result.

Ear noises that may be caused by tinnitus have also affected many other famous people, including the late ABC newsman Peter Jennings, broadcaster Larry King, actor Richard Thomas, and U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and the late Ronald Reagan.

Having tinnitus is not an sign or symptom that you're losing your hearing completely. But if you hear xonstant ringing in the ears, or sounds like a whirr, hum, buzz, hiss, whoosh or anything else that shouldn't be there, you should definitely see a specialist for a hearing exam as soon as you can.
