Fashion In The Public Eye

How often do you buy the national rags, open it up to the middle pages and find snaps of recognisible personalities from TV, film and music posing, walking the street or in compromising positions? All too often, but do you pay attention to what they're wearing...?

Celebrities can be partially defined by how they dress and not just by how they act. But when celebrities are caught on camera behaving badly, how does this effect the brand behind the clothes they wear?

More often than not, and such is the case that "all publicity is good publicity", designer clothing labels will benefit from the misbehavings of those celebrity fans. Take for example Pete Docherty (ex Libertines frontman). Docherty has been photographed on numerous occasions wearing Gio-Goi clothes, a label he seems to endorse quite closely. This has massively increased the popularity of Gio Goi and brought it to the "indie" crowd.

With this taken on board, one could argue that if a celebrity is spotted wearing your gear; you've made it. But what if a certain celebrity fuels an unsavoury subculture that is generally considered bad? A good example being bands like Oasis, who wore the expensive stuff and promoted "lad culture". Many restaurants disallow entry to people wearing brands like Henry Lloyd, for example, simply due to the publicity cause by famous people that wore that clothing brand.

Ultimately I would consider celebrity fashion a positive however, with a certain MTV presenter wearing clothing by a relatively underground brand here in the UK; Drunknmunky. It gives great exposure and celebrities often give their opinions on music, film, politics and the like, so why should they not express themselves visually also?

Huge online clothing store ASOS prides itself on bringing celebrity fashion to the man (and woman) on the street, so it's clear that there is a massive market for celebrity fashion. And it makes sense - who wouldn't want to dress like their favourite artists and actors?
