I thought exercise is supposed to raise the metabolism? The short answer is that exercise does raise the metabolism and help to build lean muscle mass. You will recall that it takes more calories to maintain muscle than fat, thus raising the metabolism.

Conventional diets may actually make you lose lean muscle if you do not get adequate protein. Without enough protein, your body will burn muscle rather than fat and your metabolism will drop drastically.
