Favorite Smells
Frying onions! The smell makes me hungry, even if I’ve just eaten. Lovely onions, slowly frying in some grease or oil, doesn’t matter what you are planning to do with the fried onions. There is just something very inviting and homely about the smell of onions frying. It makes all the tears you get from peeling the onions worth the while. The smell of freshly brewed coffee, especially early in the mornings is so invigorating, you just want to go out and conquer the world! Of course, you first have to have that beautiful cup of java before you attempt to go out and fix everything that is wrong out there in the big, bad world. Going to the movies, and the first smell you smell when you enter the foyer, is the popcorn. Whenever I smell popcorn being made, it takes me back to those first of going to matinees back when I was a teenager. Just thinking back to those days has me salivating all over. One chore I do with a smile, is changing the linen on the beds every week. The anticipation of getting into that clean smelling bed at the end of the day is so lovely, this one chore I do with pleasure. After a long hard day, that inviting smell of clean fresh sheets on the bed is enough to let you forget about stresses and worries of the day. The smell of a baby, just after it’s been bathed, all soft and cuddly smelling. Baby powder and lotion, so precious, even if you do not like babies, this is one smell that softens even the hardest of hearts. The smell of rain. After a hot dry summer’s day, you go outside for a last look at the heat waves and wilted flowers, only to be met with the promise of rain on the wind. It makes your emotions soar and lifts the last little bit of doom, worry and tiredness from your soul. Smell is a powerful mental trigger, to remember times, happenings, good and bad. The smell of baking, anything from biscuits to cakes to rusks. That smell just invites you to a very homely place. It takes me back to Sunday roasts and baking biscuits in anticipation to the holidays. Another thing that takes me back to my childhood, is the smell of sharpening a pencil. Those days in early prep school, you had these mechanical pencil sharpeners, with a sling on the side, and if you sharpened the pencil for too long, the whole thing will disappear in seconds. But the smell, it takes me back quite a few years. Then of course, your first perfume or cologne . That one your mom or your grand mom gave you. You didn’t like it, but you wore it, because it was the only one you had. I know you are smiling, it brought back memories for you too, didn’t it?
