Feed Distribution Ads Can Create A Profitable Revenue Stream For Publishers

If you produce syndicated content for the web, you have probably wondered at times how to monetize that content. Although there are many people who write blogs simply for the fun of it, with no expectation of a financial reward, there are also many others who would like to see their work pay off for them financially. Paid advertising is a good way to make money from your content and it is not intrusive to your audience. People have become accustomed to seeing ads on free content and they usually prefer to put up with ads rather than paying for content. Banner ads placed on websites that are based on CPM (cost per thousand views)can bring in some revenues to publishers. However, you may not realize that you can sell targeted ads in your feed distribution and increase your CPM.

Gawker Media and other large sites have been successful at selling ads in their feed distribution, getting an excellent return for their efforts. The head of sales at Gawker, Chris Batty says that although there are some unique challenges to adding advertising to feed distribution, it has become part of the revenue stream of many publishers. Even small publishers can benefit from using advertising with their RSS feeds. This new market has grown quickly and in some cases the CPM with RSS feed advertising will even be more successful than more traditional websites.

When you include ads in your feed distribution it is important that the ads are closely related to your content. If you focus on relevant ads, your subscribers will be much more receptive to them. You must also control the frequency of the ads. When ads appear too often, you will simply be annoying your subscribers. Too many ads can actually drown out the message of your content. If you can keep the frequency of the ads under control, you can bring in more revenue as you will be less likely to turn off subscribers. If you approach this properly, using your feed distribution as a revenue stream can benefit you as well as your advertising partners.
