Feeling Down: Give Volunteering A Try

Charity work with young people is one of the most rewarding activities a person can engage in. In my experiences with voluntary work, I have been the one who has been the most grateful for the opportunity to serve. I have had the opportunity to work with the Boy Scouts, the Boys and Girls Club, and the YMCA in various volunteering-type activities. There are many other groups and organizations who offer charity work, we just need to ask.

One of the most rewarding activities I have been a part of was a food drive for the Boy Scouts in which we were able to gather up several hundred cans of food, rice, cereal, spaghetti, fruits, and vegetables. When we delivered the food to the local shelter, we were able to watch as kids as young as 2 or 3 were able to have a full meal for the first time in a long while. Adults were also there and could not have been more grateful for our service. That is something I have learned through charity work, people offer sincere thanks when we give our time.

Time is one of our most valuable possessions because we can't save it, we can't go back in time, and we can't change what we did in the past. The funny thing about time, is that we waste it a lot more often then we do with other valuable items such as money. Volunteering and helping with young adults can be one of the greatest investments we can make with our time. Serving the youth of our world will allow them to adequately gain the skills they will need in order to lead future generations into a brighter tomorrow.

Growing up in the world today provides a completely different challenge than those presented to past generations. For the first time in history, more young people are growing up in singe-parent or foster homes than those who grow up in two-parent homes. While many parents are capable of handling children on their own, the kids are the ones who suffer due to less time spent with adults who have been through similar experiences that they are going through. Every young person needs a mentor, and through voluntary work such as being a Big Brother or Big Sister each and every one of us can be that mentor.

A lot of people have the time necessary to help out these young kids but don't know where to start. There are plenty of groups in our inner-city communities who set up activities where you can go and volunteer. If you don't live in a community where other organizations set up these activities, you could be the one to change that scenario. You can set up food and clothes drives, sports camps, craft fairs, clean-up projects, and many other activities with relatively little problems. The biggest thing that we need to do in order to help the youth of the world is to be willing to give a little bit of time, I promise it will make a difference in their lives as well as your own.
