Psychologists have continuously proven that listening to a relaxing, mood-changing kind of music can change the general outlook of a person. There is a general tendency for you to listen to loud and depressing songs while you have the sad thoughts, and this is perfectly normal. However, try to keep a range of music at hand. You might want to start with the sad, angst-filled songs, then slowly move towards the kind of songs with a happier tone or message. It would be good to choose your own “power songs” – those that will inspire you to find the good in whatever bad happening and dare to try once more. Another form of fighting depression is investing time on physical activities, in order to get rid of the negative energies and feel revitalized for another challenge in life. One way to do this is to exercise. Go to the gym. Or do the simpler ones like jogging or bicycling in a park with some relaxing view. Doing physical activities would give you time to think, sweat off the weakness that the depressive thoughts have given you, and renew yourself. The feelings of sadness and discontent are exacerbated by the lack of a means to express yourself. A way of fighting depression is to find the appropriate means to say what you are not usually able to say. Keep a journal, write your thoughts. Compose poems (and don’t feel insecure if you think they’re not worth publishing). Do some sketches. Try painting. You can even find an instrument like a guitar and learn how to play it. Some new hobby perhaps like photography can also be worth trying. You can even enroll in some dancing class and find that inner groove you never thought you had.
