Financial Modelling Template

Lesson Overview

This, very short, lesson will share with you the template we use at IndexMatch for all our models.
Lesson

One of the modeling Best Practice Rules is to use a consistent template for all sheets.

The details of setting up our template are below. We are happy for you to use our template if you want or develop your own.

We are going to go through each step so that we can explain some of the elements that you might not otherwise notice. You may want to build the template as we describe it or download the template now to look at.

-Columns Widths
-Column A, B C – Width 2 and Bold. These are going to be used for headings
-Column D – Width 25. This is for input names
-Column E, F, G – Width 8. These are for units, inputs and totals / outputs respectively.
-Column H, I, J, K, L – Width 2. These are for control accounts. More in lesson 14.

Header
Select Rows 1-6 and shade them light blue. These are for timeline information that you always need. For an annual model we recommend : Year, Start Date, End Date and Period.

Freeze Panes
Select Cell M7 and freeze panes. This is to improve navigation.

Timeline
Select Cell D2 and Type ‘Year’
Select Cell M2 and Type ‘1’
Press ‘ctrl’ and drag cell M2 across for 20 period. This should automatically add one to each cell.

Hide unused space
Select columns AH. Press and hold ‘ctrl’ ‘shift’ and the right arrow key. This should highlight all the columns from AH to the end of the worksheet. Hide these columns by right clicking the mouse and selecting hide.

You’ll notice this leaves one column (AG) after the timeline blank. This is so that it is explicitly clear that you have reached the end of the model.

Headings
Select row 8. Highlight it grey. Add a heading in cell B8.
Select row 20. Highlight it grey. Add the text ‘END OF SHEET’ in cell A20.
