Find Out About Different Treatments For Breast Cancer
Treatments for breast cancer can be categorized into two therapies - local and systemic. Local therapy is conducted for removing or killing the cancerous cells in the breast and those spreading to the adjacent parts of the body like lymph nodes. Surgery and radiation are carried out as a part of the local therapy for treating breast cancer. The extent of the removal of cancerous breast cells depends largely on the extent to which the disease has spread. In some cases, the surgeon provides a few alternatives with regard to the extent of breast removal. Mastectomy is the most widely recommended treatment plan for killing the cancerous cells present in the breast. Removal of the breast and the axillary lymph nodes is done by performing modified radical mastectomy. However if it is found that the cancerous cells have not spread to lymph nodes but have remained confined only to the breast then a simple mastectomy is recommended for removing only the breast through surgery. Some of the highly effective treatment methods that are carried out by surgeons for removing only a portion of the breast are lumpectomy, quadrentectomy and partial mastectomy. When a part of the lymph nodes are to be removed under the arms then a patient has to undergo an axillary dissection. In most cases, patients opt for radiation therapy to treat breast cancer. The therapy entails the use of specialized high-energy x-ray beams for killing the fast spreading cancerous cells. It is a painless treatment used for removing as many cancer cells as possible and thus widely chosen as a good alternative by people who do not want to experience any form of pain through undergoing surgery. A patient undergoing this treatment form is given radiation without getting hospitalized. Potential and actual risks of cancer spreading from the breast to other parts of the body can be treated with a systemic therapy. The general term used for this form of treatment is chemotherapy. Drugs are also used as a part of some of the treatments for breast cancer for killing cancerous cells.
