There are different types of treatments for breast cancer and the one that is most suitable for a person depends entirely on her health condition and upon the stage of the disease. Some of the highly effective treatment methods that are carried out by surgeons for removing only a portion of the breast are lumpectomy, quadrentectomy and partial mastectomy. When a part of the lymph nodes are to be removed under the arms then a patient has to undergo an axillary dissection.

In most cases, patients opt for radiation therapy to treat breast cancer. The therapy entails the use of specialized high-energy x-ray beams for killing the fast spreading cancerous cells. It is a painless treatment used for removing as many cancer cells as possible and thus widely chosen as a good alternative by people who do not want to experience any form of pain through undergoing surgery. A patient undergoing this treatment form is given radiation without getting hospitalized.

Potential and actual risks of cancer spreading from the breast to other parts of the body can be treated with a systemic therapy. The general term used for this form of treatment is chemotherapy. Drugs are also used as a part of some of the treatments for breast cancer for killing cancerous cells.
