Finding The Best Footwear Choice

While there are some lucky people out there for whom finding the best footwear is as simple as trying on a pair of shoes in their size, most people have more trouble than this. Feet are subject to a lot of wear and tear, and a shoe that doesn't fit, even slightly, can have major consequences.

Shoes made for active use are both easier and harder to find than those intended for casual or office wear. They are harder because they must offer a truly comfortable and supportive fit, since running or playing sports requires more from your shoes than picking up groceries. But it can be easier to find the right pair, because you have more choices since you aren't limited by 'appropriateness, ' as you might be with office or casual wear.

Shoes that are worn for nice occasions tend to have the opposite problem. They must fit a certain social expectation for appearance, which can make finding comfortable ones a challenge. If these are to be work shoes, there are often even explicit regulations regarding what the shoes can and cannot look like, which can increase the difficulty of finding good ones.

In some jobs, women are still expected to wear heels. Though this may not be a requisite that is explicitly spelled out, not complying with the social expectation can have nasty, if subtle, consequences. Many women who are in professions that expect this type of dress are left with no option but to seek out the most comfortable heels they can, which is something of any oxymoron.

For non-work occasions, the choice of shoes is much more open. Different people prefer different choices, but if you have any trouble with your feet-- and even if you don't-- you should limit the time spent wearing high heels, sandals with no support, and any shoes you find uncomfortable. You can do permanent damage to your feet if you don't listen to what they are telling you.

Any kind of sneakers, such as tennis shoes or cross-trainers, are a good option for most people. Some women just cannot bring themselves to 'dress down' this much, so if this is the case, choose the lowest heels or the most comfortable and supportive flats you feel you can wear out. Picking the right shoe can make a lot of difference in terms of both comfort and foot health, and your casual shoes are where you have the most options.

If you have had difficulty finding shoes that fit right for a long time, you might have an uncommonly sized or shaped foot. People with extra-wide or extra-narrow feet often need to special order their shoes in order to get ones that fit right. And people with high arches or flat feet often need to wear orthotic inserts in order to make their shoes fit well.

Picking out the best footwear for you can often take a while. But the time spent is generally paid back in the years of comfort a good pair of shoes can give you. And avoiding damage to your feet by choosing comfortable, supportive shoes wherever possible will allow you to enjoy pain-free time spent on your feet for many years to come.
