Finding Absolution Through Kindness
What I’m talking about is kindness. It’s that simple, but completely powerful in what it can accomplish. How many times have you had somebody perform a random act of kindness toward you, and it touched you in a deep way? These acts of kindness are what bridge all the gaps within our broken society, and it’s through kindness that we can redeem the parts of ourselves that are questionable. If you really look at the 7 deadly sins that we fight internally on a daily basis, then you can’t help but notice that every single one of them is rooted in pure selfishness. Our society is bred from a very early age to covet the success of others as a way to guide us toward achieving “the American Dream” of being financially successful as well as a ahead of the Joneses in our own material possessions. The bigger your house, the more expensive your car, the flashier your jewelry, and the finer your clothes are the elements of what separates the winners from the losers, and too often it seems that people will try and win this game of success at the expense of others. There’s that “dog eat dog” mentality that drives people to be defined as a winner, and if they have to step on a few little people along the way, then so be it. Not a very “kind” scenario, but this is what our society has become, and it’s time for it to change. With greater reward comes greater responsibility, and it’s with this greater responsibility that we show others that they are what is truly important. Gaining a bunch of “stuff” can only carry you so far with the shallow and fleeting happiness that you gain until you realize what your true self worth is, and it’s NOT what you do for a living or what you’ve gained in material items along the way, but what you are willing to give of yourself in some way to improve the lives of others. It’s the chasm that divides the superficial from the genuine, and moving your life toward the genuine joy that is achieved through the kindness that you can do for others is how you will overcome that selfishness that has kept you from your true purpose here in this existence, which is to build greater connections amongst the others that inhabit our world, and not try to stand above them wielding the arrogance of material success. The next time you’re feeling selfish and deep inside you want to replace the ugliness of your acts with something that can help you start to wipe the slate clean, try to be kind to others without any possible reward in mind, except the knowledge that your kindness might make somebody’s life a bit better in some wonderful way. The more you do this, the more you’ll find that your sense of worth to others has grown up and replaced your ego.
