Finding The Right Driver For You

GET CUSTOM FITTED

Why? So you can hit it further. As simple as that! A good fitter will find the combination of head and shaft that works best for you with the help of a computerised launch monitor. The figures don’t lie! You might just be pleasantly surprised - it is not unheard of for fitters to find an extra 30 (yes THIRTY!) yards of distance.

CONSULT THE EXPERTS

With so many models available, and dozens of permutations within each one, choosing a driver can be a tricky business. Especially if you are looking at the more expensive models, we strongly recommend you seek expert advice.

KEEP AN OPEN MIND

A top-of-the-range 9Ú stiff-shafted model might work brilliantly in the hands of a tour pro or your club champion, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the one for you. More important is choosing one with a suitable loft and shaft. Have a good look around and concentrate on getting a driver that is right for you - not your low-handicap friend.

DON’T BE OBSESSED BY LOOKS

Beauty is only skin-deep! You might be surprised just how quickly you stop noticing what a driver looks like once you start hitting shots. More important is what the shots are like and how they feel. Pretty is as pretty does - and if you find one that hits fairways and goes a long way then who cares what it looks like.

GO FOR MORE LOFT

Yes, some of us do hit the ball plenty high enough already. But most of us would benefit from an extra degree or two. More loft helps you to hit the ball further and straighter more often. It also adds forgiveness. Trust us on this one many tour pros use drivers with 10 and 11Ú these days.
SOUND IS FEEL

This is really important. Drivers with all-titanium heads tend to make a louder, cleaner noise. Those with a composite head (so a mixture of titanium and carbon) offer a more muffled kind of sound. Try one of each type and see if you have a strong preference.

SHAFTS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Without getting overly technical, getting the right shaft will help you achieve a better flight and hit the ball further. A shaft unsuited to your swing will make the game very difficult indeed. So much so that some experts believe the shaft is more important than the head – it’s certainly more expensive.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY

No matter how good the theory is or how many waggles you perform, without actually hitting some shots you simply don’t know how a driver will perform. It’s all very well picking a driver that looks pretty or is made by your favourite brand – but how about actually hitting it before you make up your mind. It is the most basic piece of advice, but so many amateurs fail to put it into practice.

ESTABLISH A BUDGET

Sounds obvious, but until you know what you’re prepared to spend it’s impossible to start looking seriously. It’s all very well us saying a model that costs á300 is brilliant but not much use if you’re not prepared to pay that much.

CONSIDER AN OFFSET MODE

Lots of companies offer an offset version of their most popular models. An offset driver is designed so that the toe of the club is encouraged to catch up with the heel as you approach impact. That’s ideal if you struggle with a slice it will straighten up your shots and give you some extra distance.
