Designing by Mood

The mood of the room should be a designers motivation and no other, it is the mood that dictates color and furniture, and not the other way around. A mood is the purpose of the room, the reason that it exists. A great example is a play room where the sole purpose of the room is to have fun and enjoy oneself. One more example would be the bedroom, the most personal quarters, and is designed for only one person. Just as houses are dictated by mood, a great dollhouse should as well. To tap into your mood settings, think about the purpose of the room, why it is their, and what designs, colors, furniture, would better suit that mood. The more you can portray the appropriate move, the more you will convince your friends and family your great skills as a miniaturist.

Planning and Preparation with your Miniatures

If you fail to plan you plan to fail. A plan of action is crucial because it will keep you on a track leading to success. With miniature design a plan of action will consist of a floor plan and budget. A floor plan is a drawing, picture, or print of a dollhouse room that you would like to coordinate. There are many room designs both online and off. Take a note book and jot down things that you would like to add, modify, or change with your plan. If you see something in your notes worthy of changing your plan, then go ahead and do it. Once you have a good idea of what you would like you will need to budget accordingly. It does not matter how great a miniature is, if it makes you overspend you probably will regret it when you need that money for other items. And if you can't buy the furniture piece yet, save up until you can.

Matching Colors: A Science that is Well Developed to Help

Interior design, for your own personal home, or for your dollhouse kit can be a matter of color choices. The desire to coordinate is known throughout any art or design school and is taught at a basic level using a color wheel. This wheel was designed to fit all colors into a solid circle to express similarities and differences. The colors right next to each other are called analogous colors, and offer slight similarities for color patterns, and those opposite offer the most contrast and pop. When starting your designing pick up a color wheel for your color selections, a little knowledge about color coordination will go a long way to help your design and flow capabilities.

Styling by Era

Creating style can be more intense than what you have previously thought, what era will your dollhouse resemble? Most of us want the furniture, paint, wallpaper, etc, to match and flow together from one room to another. This is creating a styling theme. When you get right down to it, you might have your choice set out for you as there are really only three major era styles in dollhouse furniture. The first is Victorian, a design established in the mid 1800’s that will give you old home design from cooking stoves to classic armoires. Modern furniture is more technological, rigid, and fun - giving you options like Television sets, pool tables, and other modern pieces. Traditional furniture doesn't have a lot of pep, but the selection is great - this will fit any dollhouse and can be used at times in matching Modern or Victorian styles.
