Firearm Safety And Home Security

For many in remote or rural areas like Louisiana or Colorado, firearms are synonymous with home security. What you may not know is that the presence of a firearm in your home may lead to a worse outcome during a home invasion than not having one at all if not properly stored. Not only can it be found and used against you and your family, but leaving a loaded gun in a place where anyone can get their hands on it can result in accidental injury or death. If you feel it necessary to have a firearm in your home, make sure you take the following precautions to make sure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

For one, always treat your gun as if it is actually loaded. Many accidents have been reported where a loaded gun was believed to be unloaded. For this reason, it’s important that you use the same caution with a firearm you think to be unloaded as you would with the knowledge that there are bullets inside. Keep your fingers off the trigger at all times and keep the safety latch on. Never point the gun at anyone unless you have the intention to shoot.

It’s also a good idea to store the parts of your firearm separately. Keep the ammunition locked in one safe or cabinet and the components of the gun in another. This way, if an intruder or someone else who shouldn’t have their hands on a gun, such as a curious child, manages to make their way into one locked container, they would still have to find and crack the other in order to make the firearm loaded and dangerous.

You can also purchase a gun lock that prohibits you from firing the gun as long as it is fastened around the trigger guard. If you need remove the lock in an emergency, make sure you don’t do it forcefully as the lock will permanently damage the firearm, rendering it unusable. This ensures that if your gun does fall into the wrong hands and they don’t have the means to unlock it, they won’t be able to use it even if wrenched free. Beware, however, that sometimes a gun can still be loaded and shot even with the trigger lock in place.

In addition to all of the precautions taken to keep the gun and ammunition locked up and out of sight, you should also increase your overall home security so it never gets down to that point. A home alarm is a worthwhile investment that can inform you of the first forced entry or perimeter breach. This way, you have time to secure yourself inside a panic room or barricade yourself inside an interior room until help arrives.

If you do find yourself face to face with an intruder and you have your firearm nearby, only present it if absolutely necessary. Cooperate with the intruder and don’t threaten with your gun unless the safety of you or another one present is in immediate danger.
