First home essentials guide

Buying your first property is an experience like no other. You've found the right place, made your offer, and crossed your fingers that your bid will be accepted. Finally the keys are in your hand! Now what?

When moving into your first home it is easy to over look certain items- usually the items you take for granted are the most important thing such as white goods.

It is best to make a list room by room of the appliances you have in your parent’s house (or whomever you are living with now). This makes it easier to see what is an essential to you and what isn’t.

At first it is best to get a collection of the basics- washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge, oven and then when you are sure you can afford to- splash out on things such as a new microwave, sandwich maker and toaster.

Until you can get the extras mentioned above you can use your cooker/ grill to make toast, saving you the expense of buying a toaster straight away.

What you need for your new property really depends on the kind of place you have bought. New and unfurnished apartments, newly built houses, and second-hand homes will each have their specific needs in terms of furnishing. Buying the basics at first will allow you to slowly fill your new property hopefully without emptying your bank account at the same time!

The market for white goods is very competitive at the moment and it is possible to obtain the essentials without breaking the bank.
