Being part of a condominium association or apartment complex can lead residents to a false sense of security. There seems to be someone looking after your concerns -- the condo board, the security detail, or maybe surveillance cameras -- but you should remember that the only real defense you’ll ever have in home security is what you do yourself. 1. You can take care of things once you move in and get unpacked. You’ll be in for a rude awakening assuming that one. Every type of multiple-family housing complex has its own rules and regulations. Once you’re inside, it may be too late to do what you want, as far as home security precautions go. 2. There’s a security team doing regular sweeps. Never assume that there’s a team of good men on the job. Security jobs tend to not be the best paying work, so don’t be surprised if you find that guards in your building are cutting corners. 3. Home alarm systems are totally unnecessary in apartment complexes. There are just as many reasons for apartment dwellers to invest in a home alarm system as people living on their own land in a single house. In fact, as there are so many chances for a thief in a multi-unit dwelling, it could be more appealing to try to get a number of scores in a single night.

4. You’re the only one with a key to your apartment. Someone lived in the apartment before you. The real estate office had to show the apartment. There were renovations to complete before you moved in. Once you start adding it up, the number of people with a key to your apartment might not be countable using both hands. Ask if you can change the locks, or at least switch locks with an unoccupied unit in the building.

5. Just because you’re renting, there is no way to get insurance. Assuming you can’t get insurance because you’re renting is foolish. There are plenty of packages available for renters. Surely, there will be one that can fit your needs, whether you’re staying short-term or long-term.
