Five Home Security Questions To Ask Before Leaving The House

There are a variety of different ways to tackle the issues of home security on a daily basis. Once you have an alarm up and running, you have the advantage of automated protection and, hopefully, a monitoring service to back you up in case anything happens while you’re out for the day. In some ways, that might not be enough. To make sure you have a solid overall plan in the home security department, look over this list and ask yourself these five questions before leaving the house for a day at work.

1. Have I left some easy openings for an intruder? Whether it’s an open door or an easy to unlatch window, you don’t want to take the pressure off of anyone who wants to enter your home. Keep your doors and windows locked, even the doors inside your garage which connect to the house. Also, keep any spare cars with their doors locked as well. Anyone who can access the vehicle registration number and insurance from your car is one step from being able to use your identity.

2. Are there fire hazards inside that I’ve ignored? It could be a faultily wired socket, or an overloaded extension cord. It could be a cook or housekeeper who is sloppy when using the stove. There are a variety of ways for your house to catch fire. Are the smoke detectors ready to respond? Are they tied to your home alarm system in case of a fire?

3. Who are the people that are looking after my children or parents? When you bring in a nanny or domestic helper for your elderly relatives, you need to make sure they are who they say they are. Don’t leave your family in the hands of a stranger. Be thorough in your employee screening, making sure to dot the i’s and cross the t’s with references before you hand over the keys and the responsibility to them.

4. Is the place child-proofed and safe for the elderly, too? Maybe you have the right people to take care of your family while you’re away, but have you set up a dangerous environment? Putting all the harmful toxins out of reach is essential with children around. Having the right kind of low carpet is important in the case of the elderly, who are vulnerable to trips and falls.

5. Do I have someone ready to respond if my home alarm system starts to ring? If anything should happen and your home alarm goes off, is there someone to speak with your security company? Before the police get sent, they may need the green light. If your house is empty, make sure there is a neighbor or friend who can handle this important step and tell the authorities you need help in case of an emergency.
