Five Signs Your Neighborhood Has Major Home Security Threats

Reputations are always a little deceiving. What has come before may not always come after -- in fact, it may never happen again. The idea that the future can be predicted by the results of the past has put many a gambler in debt, and caused many people to put their own security in jeopardy. You shouldn’t judge the safety of a neighborhood on its reputation alone. Go through this neighborhood checklist and see if you need to improve your home security measures in order to keep your family and property safe.

1. People aren’t spending too much time outside of their houses. Maybe it’s just one of those neighborhoods where people keep to themselves, but then again, maybe not. In truly safe neighborhoods, the young and old can stroll down the lanes at all hours of the day without feeling threatened. Once you have to start watching your back, your home security becomes an important issue.

2. You see the signs of home security companies all over the neighborhood. If your neighbors are so bent on advertising that they have hired professional security companies, maybe it’s time you double-checked your own security measures. After all, they are not advertising to folks interested in their holiday decorations. They’re putting the word out there to interested parties: if they want to attempt a break-in, they’ll have an alarm to contend with.

3. Slowly but surely, fences and motion-sensing lights become a part of every house’s exterior. Maybe mum’s the word on neighborhood gossip but a sure way to see people are nervous is the development of many classic home security measures. Trying to shine a light on prowlers and make access difficult with fences are both sound security tactics. Once they are popping up, you should consider making some changes of your own in your security plan.

4. There is no neighborhood watch program. You can call it a sign of confidence, but it might be better to see it as a form of hubris. Setting up a neighborhood watch program means that neighbors are helping out law enforcement. This connection makes it unpleasant for criminals who see the neighborhood as a place they could operate. Part of a criminal’s job is finding out when there are the least officers working the beat, meaning they’ll have more time before a response can be made.

5. You’ve heard the sound with your own ears. Seeing is believing, but keeping your ears open will tell you a lot about your neighborhood’s safety level. If you start to hear police sirens or home alarms ringing, the time has come to review your own security apparatus. Stranger things have happened: in a recession, a neighborhood can turn from peaceful and safe to questionable in a short period of time.
