The amount of competition should be the first consideration when reviewing affiliate marketing opportunities. Identifying level of competition is relatively easy. Google the longtail (three or four-word, specific) keyword phrase and if there are 20,000 results or fewer, this is a niche to go for because it has little competition. Relatively obscure niches are great places for new affiliates to start. Longtail keywords that are searched often but not used by many others are precious gems.

Once a few niches presenting opportunities are selected, affiliate program offers should be researched. Well-converting programs are only useful if an affiliate can afford the offers. Though this investigative effort may seem time-consuming, no one wants to spend money and time on offers that will not convert. It is much wiser to start off on solid financial ground from an expense perspective because it makes the affiliate experience less of a nail-biter.

When determining business expenses, affiliates should identify budgets for Web hosting, a domain name, site development, and any copywriting needs. Long-term thinking should be used when doing these calculations. Money will not immediately begin flowing back but will start rolling in over the long-term as long as a wise choice is made. Affiliates should only put effort into a program that will be lucrative from this viewpoint.

Once these things have been considered and a niche is found, other techniques must be put into place. The best keywords will need to be identified and used in advertisements and site or blog content. In addition, methods for assessing traffic to the site and the success of advertising should be incorporated into the business toolbox.

If it proves difficult to find a niche that converts and pays well and is not too saturated, the online entrepreneur may need to change the marketing strategy. This may involve taking an approach that does not consider rankings from search engines. Some affiliates marketers experience more success when they comment on forums and blogs, use email campaigns, or implement polling sites.
