Five Tips For Building Good Credit

Building good credit is not rocket science. It is also not a skill you are born with. Most people are not officially or formerly taught how to manage their credit or develop good spending habits. Below are five quick, useful, and practical tips for building and maintaining good credit.

Create a Budget

Sounds like a no brainer. We have all been told this at least once in our lifetime. But the fact is few of us do it. Setting a financial budget allows you to take control of your spending by understanding exactly where your money goes.

The budget is perfect for identifying small, repetitive, frivolous purchases that you may not realize consume lots of your money. Cigarettes, shoes, and eating out for lunch at work are all examples of things we could probably cut back on.

Borrow on Your Own Terms

Don’t borrow money because you have to. If you are getting ready to make a large purchase, such as a home or vehicle, take your time. Educate yourself in advance and shop around for the best loans. Give yourself enough forewarning to borrow on your terms.

Know How to Use Your Credit

It is hard to use something responsibly if you don’t understand what it is. By studying your annual credit report and how it works, you can ensure that you are educated and prepared to make a borrowing decision when you need to.

In addition to reviewing your annual credit report, make sure you know how to use your credit. Use long term credit for long term purchases and short term credit for short term purchases. For example, don’t refinance your home to fund a trip to Florida and don’t use your credit cards to buy a vehicle.

Set Goals and Strive to Reach Them

Goals are needed to get good results. Whether you are trying to lose weight, graduate college, or build good credit, without goals it is difficult to gage your success. When building good credit, set goals to both save money and study your annual credit report.
