Five Ways To Beat The Heat In Atlanta

As the hot days of summer hit the Atlanta area, residents and visitors begin to look for ways to escape the heat. There are several fun options available for people of all ages. Try out one of these five ways to keep cool in Atlanta.
Tubing on the Chattahoochee River is a great way to cool off. The river runs through the northern and western suburbs of the city. Tubes can be rented from $10 River Tubing, an outfitter in Duluth, Georgia, or from Chattahoochee Outfitters in Roswell. Both outfitters include shuttle service back to your vehicle in the rental price. A quick dip in the Chattahoochee is refreshing. Water temperature remains around 50 degrees year round. After water releases from Buford Dam, the river can produce a strong current. Outfitters monitor the times of the water releases, so tubers will not be caught unaware.

Visiting a water park is another way to beat the heat. Six Flags Whitewater is located at 250 Cobb Parkway North in Marietta. This is the South’s largest water park. Spend the day enjoying the Wave Pool, a Lazy River float, the exciting slides, or Tree House Island. There is a water activity pool for very young visitors. Every member of the family can find something to enjoy here. Daily tickets are $36.99. Children under 48 inches tall are admitted for $26.99. Parking is $12 per day. Purchasing tickets online will save $7.

Those on a tighter budget may enjoy a visit to Piedmont Park in midtown Atlanta. Legacy Fountain is the park’s brand new interactive water feature. Kids love splashing in the 70 jets that shoot water as high as 30 feet into the air. The fountain operates from 8am-8pm daily and is free. Piedmont’s Aquatic Center was extensively remodeled in 2009. The pool has a beach entry with a current for floating as well as lap lanes for serious swimmers. Daily admission is quite reasonable, at $4 for adults and $2 for kids 6-16. Children under age 6 are admitted for $1. There are free swim hours weekday afternoons from 3-5pm. The pool is open through Labor Day.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is adjacent to Piedmont Park. Last year the garden opened its unique Canopy Walk, an elevated walkway through the trees of Storza Woods. Visitors will enjoy the shade as they wander through the oaks, maples, poplars, and hickories of one of Atlanta’s last urban forests. The temperature feels about 15 degrees cooler in this part of the garden. Visitors can continue on through a tunnel into the new Cascade Garden with its three level water feature. Benches under the pergola provide a place to sit and enjoy the soothing sounds of the water. Children wanting to get wet can splash in the Sunflower Fountain in the Children’s Garden.

Ice skating provides yet another way to stay cool. The Atlanta metro area has three facilities that offer public skating. The Atlanta Ice Forum in Duluth and the Ice Forum at Town Center in Kennesaw offer public skating sessions every day. Admission is $7 and skate rental is $3. The Cooler in Alpharetta also has daily public skating sessions. Admission is $8 or $9, depending upon the day and time. Skate rental is $3.

Any of these options can provide a respite from the city’s summer heat. They provide a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends while enjoying what Atlanta has to offer.
