Facebook has only been around for a little over five years, but it has been one of the fastest-growing and most successful websites in the history of the internet. What started as a basic website used by students at a few universities in the U.S. to keep in touch has now become popular with people of all ages all over the world. Originally, a Facebook profile page consisted of little more than some basic information and one picture. Although many might argue that Facebook has become too addictive and time-consuming, most users would probably agree that the site is very useful in some respects. Virtually everyone uses e-mail, messaging services, and cell phones these days, but there really is nothing like Facebook when it comes to keeping in touch. A related use of Facebook is reconnecting with old friends. People move away, and numbers and e-mail addresses change, but you can always find old friends and classmates on Facebook. We’ve all gotten that random friend request from an elementary school buddy—it’s always entertaining, if a little strange, to see how much people have changed in ten, fifteen, or twenty years.

3. Birthday Reminders
We all feel terrible when we forget a good friend’s birthday, but sometimes it’s hard to remember when we’re so busy and we don’t have the date written down somewhere obvious. Every Facebook user’s home page has a section for birthday reminders; this feature makes it much easier to remember those special days.

4. Picture Sharing
We’ve all heard the lie before—“Oh, of course I’ll e-mail you the pictures!” Most of us have told it ourselves—for some reason, we rarely get around to actually attaching and e-mailing pictures to our friends. Posting pictures on Facebook for everyone to see, however, is quite common and one of the easiest ways to share pictures with your friends. 5. Networking
Facebook is, after all, a networking site. Many of us use it purely for fun—we love to write on each other’s walls, tag pictures, and take quizzes to see how well we know our friends. It is an easy way to contact people about jobs and other opportunities and to stay in touch with people who may be able to help you with opportunities in the future.
