Flea Market Bargains

A perfect way to spend a lazy day is at the flea market. That type of bazaar or informal trading where you can find things new or old sold at much reduced costs. We have an open air flea market in town, every Sunday. Just recently, a new flea market opened up just across the street from the old flea market, this one indoors, so that when the weather is bad, the traders can still do business. Their little stalls are small and cramped and they stock it up to full capacity. The new flea market might be competition for the old, but it is early days yet, and we will see how it goes. The new flea market has the advantage that the stall keepers can leave their wares there, if it is not perishable. They have an effective locking system to keep their wares safe. The open air flea market however, does not have this feature and the wares need to be packed up at the end of each trading day.

People sell their home made wares there, some homemade toys, clothing, beads, paintings and other crafts. Others sell second hand clothing, CD’s, computer aids, DVD’s, food, books, potted plants, tools and machinery and bedding and towels. It is lovely just walking through the stalls and look at all the wares on offer. On a hot summer’s day, you buy a lovely cold soft drink or bottled water and enjoy the open air.

There is one stall that sells all leather products. Leather wallets, book covers, belts, handbags and purses, and little pieces of leather straps, fastened onto wooden handles, used as straps to scare naughty children with. They have stenciled on them little slogans like: “ears”, or “naughty”, or “listen” etc. It is illegal to hit your children these days, so I hope these are only used as deterrents and not used as a real way to punish disobedient children!

Other stalls duplicate some items, because a lot of people buy cheap stuff, to resell at a small profit, and you will find socks, gloves, shoes and bags of the same kind in every other stall all over the market. The only difference would be in their prices, as they know that people will buy at the stall with the lowest prices.

Food stalls are all over the place, from curry and rice, to pancakes, to hot dogs and hamburgers to Chinese food and samoosas. Some sell unusual food like a potato cut into a spiral, put on a stick and deep fried like chips.

Among the home crafts, there are beautiful candle holders and candles, some ceramic pots and burners, as well as porcelain dolls. Some of the most exquisite scented candles can be bought at these flea markets.

Many stalls sell cosmetics, makeup and perfume at reduced prices. These are all exhibited very plainly and not a lot of trouble is taken, because a lot of hands pass these stalls, and many pick up and touch and sample the products. The stall owners have to keep their eyes open for shoplifters and I’m sure that some of them have had serious losses at flea markets such as this.
