Fly A Mig Aircraft At Supersonic Speed

Fly MiG 29 Fulcrum is simply the coolest thing you can do. I booked a mix of stratosphere flight which is called « Edge of Space » by MiGFlug, and aerobatic. This was perfect. The stratosphere flight is relaxing, you can enjoy a wonderful view and you’ll see the curvature of the earth. It’s very beautiful. The second part of the MiG 29 Fulcrum jet experience was acrobatics, and we really did a lot of manouvres. The ones I remember where of course Loopings, Rolls, and some not so well-known like split-S and Immelman. There were some 3-4 more, which are used during dog fights. They were invented to confuse fighter pilots of enemy fighter aircraft like the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the F-18 Hornet.

And I was given control of the MiG fighter jet. It’s a powerful feeling to control a supersonic fighter aircraft. It’s easier than I thought. If course I didn’t really control the jet myself, it is more complicated. I only got the control stick, my pilot Mikhail did all the other work, trim etc. The command was « my control » and « your control ». Like all other commands you learn before flying a MiG, it was simple and clear to avoid misunderstanding.

Really fun is to feel the MiG 29 afterburner. MiG fighter jets incredibly accelerate when using the afterburner. I felt like somebody kicked me in my seat! It’s so powerful, all I experienced before, fast cars etc. is not comparable to flying MiGs! The MiG-29 top speed is Mach 2.3. It is one of the fastest Mig Fighter Jets and faster than comparable NATO fighter aircraft. Also, the manouvrability of the MiG 29 Fulcrum is better, it is aerodynamically superior. Together with it’s larger sister, the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker, it surprised military and aviation experts at airshows in the west when it first flew there. Cobra manouvres and other is something jet fighters from the west are not able to perform.

I was suprised about the G-Forces I had never experienced before. I knew that it will be tough, but I though that I can handle it without problems. In the end I really had several black outs. Always when the G Forces were above 6G I just didn’t see anything. A very strange feeling, it just gets black! After the MiG flight in Russia I was really exhausted. I thought that I will go out in Nizhny Novgorod, at least for a few beers. But I went straight back to my hotel to get some sleep. What a great experience!

Saville Lampron lives in CLICHY-SOUS-BOIS, France. The MiG flight was the birthday gift he gave to himself for the 50th birthday. Saville saw the Mig 29 Fulcrum flight first at the famous Paris Airshow in Le Bourget. At that time he didn’t expect to fly that sovjet jet fighter one day.
