Flying A Remote Controlled Helicopter

A Remote controlled helicopter (also called radio controlled helicopters or RC helicopters) is great fun for everyone aged above 14 or so.
These days you can get plenty of affordable and good quality remote controlled helicopters from your local toy store, ebay or various other places online.

Some features to look out for include a:

1. A number of channels for the remote
2. Steel frame to ensure the helicopter is strong
3. A gyroscope or Gyro can be useful for stability and make learning to fly a lot easier
4. Some remove controlled helicopters even come with lights for flying at night.

Learning to fly a remote controlled helicopter can be tricky. The main controls are for forward / backward / up / down / left / right. Here is an explanation of how to get started.

The up / down control is usually the stick on the left. Push it forward to take the helicopter off the ground and let it go to take it down. This is the best way to start, take off a little bit and then down and then gradually work towards keeping it hovering in the air by keeping just the right amount of pressure on the forward switch.

Once you can hover you can try flying forwards. With the forwards / backwards control (usually the one on the right) nudge it forward and you will see the helicopter lean forward and start moving forwards. Back off for it to correct itself. Keep doing this until you get the hang of going forwards then do it quicker pulling the control back to stop abruptly.

Once you can hover and fly forwards (and stop), it's time to try to start turning. Depending on your controls you might have a dial for left and right. It can be tricky turning the deal while flying forwards but just stat slowing and you'll get the hang of it.

A remote controlled helicopter can be a lot of fun but even the good quality ones are easy to break so start flying one step at a time and you'll be a pro in no time.
