When packing for a camping trip I often get to that point when the car is so full of equipment that I wonder whether anything else will fit in. It's at such times that I begin to wonder whether everything that I've packed is really necessary.
The problem with taking a camping holiday here in the UK is that you can never be sure what the weather will be like. That means that you always seem to end up packing extra clothing, towels and other waterproof items just in case. It would be better to be able to rely on a nice bit of sunshine, but that's unfortunately rarely possible.
So what else gets packed? In the case of my family, we always take our own camping toilet with us. If you've ever experienced campsite toilet facilities then you'll have a good idea as to why many people consider a portable camping toilet to be a necessity.
Making use of toilets that don't appear to be clean and hygienic is not much fun. The alternative - bringing our own toilet with us - seems much better. Until recently, however, there were problems with this approach.
The biggest problem of all was that supposedly portable toilets were often much bigger than they needed to be. It seemed that many of the designers hadn't actually thought about the practicalities of packing a car in preparation for a camping trip.
An additional problem was that many products relied on using chemicals. This was by no means ideal. Few of us really like the idea of transporting chemicals with us when going on holiday, plus it never seemed as though this could be good for the wider environment.
Fortunately it is now possible to find toilets that don't use chemicals and that are environmentally friendly as a result. This is a distinct improvement, but the best news of all is that some modern camping toilets now fold up.
Finally this means that we can all have a practical solution - one that's better for our surroundings and doesn't take up so much room in the already crowded car!
