Foreign Languages In Elementary School (fles) - A Language Course
There has been an effort by many to categorize the different types of immersion according to the ages of students and also according to the extent of time devoted to language learning. Languages are sometimes taught as part of a full time curriculum and most of the class hours are devoted to teaching the target language. In other institutes, only a certain part of the class hours may be devoted to the foreign language. In an English school the whole time may be devoted in teaching English. Whereas for students attending an English course it may be seen that only a certain percentage of time is allotted to teaching the language. Content- based Foreign Languages in Elementary Schools (FLES) and regular Foreign Languages in Elementary Schools are practiced in many places. In content based FLES, the time spent in learning the language as well as its subject matter constitutes 15 to 50% of the class time. This program aims at preparing the student and inculcating skills related to speaking, listening, reading and writing of the language. In normal FLES programs, 5 to 15% of the class hour is allotted to learning the target foreign tongue and the rest of the time goes behind learning language itself. In this type, proficiency in listening and reading of the foreign language is guaranteed. The emphasis on these skills may vary with different programs. Both the types of FLES program helps the student to gain an understanding about the culture associated with the language and teaches him how to appreciate it.
