Fortified Wines This Christmas

Christmas is almost here and people will soon be stocking up with food and drink for the holiday season. When you are writing out your shopping list this Christmas consider adding some fortified wine to your list. Fortified wine can be a nice addition to after dinner treats such as deserts or cheese and crackers.

Fortified wines are wines that are specifically made to be drank with desserts and after dinner treats such as cheese and crackers. A fortified wine is simply put a wine to which a distilled beverage (usually brandy) has been added.

There are 5 main types of fortified wine, these are:

Madeira wine - made in the Madeira Islands, the wine is produced in a variety of styles. These styles range from dry wines to be consumed on their own to sweet wines more commonly consumed with desserts.

Marsala wine - this wine is a strong wine from Sicily, it's name is given from the islands shipping port that is called Marsala. There are two versions of Marsala wine, the fortified younger 'fine' wine that is aged around 4 months and the 'superiore' which is unfortified and aged in wooden casks for 5 years.

Port - is a fortified wine from northern Portugal. It is typically a sweet red wine, but can also come in dry, semi-dry and white varieties.

Sherry - is a fortified wine that is made from grapes grown in an area of Cádiz (Spain). Sherry is produced in many different styles, ranging from dry, light versions to dark, sweeter versions

Vermouth - is a fortified wine that is flavoured with aromatic herbs and spices. Some Vermouth is sweetened as unsweetened or dry Vermouth tends to be bitter.

Each Fortified wine is better to suited to different foods and deserts. Before deciding what wine to buy consider your after dinner desert and buy accordingly.
