Four Outrageous Underground Rap Music Acts To Watch

One of the most underground, but creatively viable, styles of underground rap music going today is so-called "horrorcore rap." Though critics often focus, wrongly, on the surface violence of some horrorcore rap lyrics, the genre is so much more.

Instead, the best artists and their fans know that the content isn't meant to be taken literally, but rather as a horror movie-style blend of shlock and shock that always makes for outrageous songs and performances.

One of the longest-lasting, and best-known acts in the horrorcore rap scene is the Detroit rap duo Insane Clown Posse. Beyond releasing its own underground rap music, he group has done much for the scene by forming its own record label, Psychopathic Records.

While Insane Clown Posse is essential horrorcore rap listening, fans of the genre would do well to check out more underground rap music on the Psychopathic Records roster. Some of the horrorcore rap artists on the label are long established, while others are up-and-coming, but all offer their own fresh take on underground rap music.

Here are some essential horrorcore rap artists on Psychopathic Records that are just as outrageous as Insane Clown Posse:

Twiztid: A duo made up of rappers Jamie Madrox and Monoxide Child, Twiztid was one of the earliest horrorcore rap acts to sign to Psychopathic Records. The group's first album, Mostasteless, came out on the label in 1997. Their style of underground rap music is characterized by a real horror-movie feel, describing the kinds of fantasy scenarios depicted in movies like Halloween.

Twiztid is also one of the most popular artists on Psychopathic Records. The group's 2009 album, W.I.C.K.E.D., is the third highest-selling album ever for the label, behind only two albums by Insane Clown Posse itself.

Dark Lotus: If you like Twiztid and ICP, then you'll love Dark Lotus -- because this Psychopathic Records act is a supergroup featuring the members of both, plus Chris Rouleau, better known as Blaze Ya Dead Homie. Dark Lotus' style of horrorcore rap incorporates goth and metal influences as well, and many lyrics focus on the occult.

Blaze Ya Dead Homie: This solo artist combines styles of underground rap music for his sound, somewhere between horrorcore rap and straight-up gangster rap.

Rouleau's stage persona is that of a reincarnated dead gang member, and as such his underground rap music has a West Coast feel, along with a slight rock influence. He is slightly less horror movie-influenced than other horrorcore rap artists, but no less outrageous.

Boondox: Hailing from Georgia, Boondox was the first underground rap music performer from the South to sign to Psychopathic Records. He's one of the most recent signees as well.

His style of underground rap music is part horrorcore rap, part confessional. His persona is that of a living, murderous scarecrow, which he uses to exact revenge on people who did him wrong. His lyrics often incorporate stories of real-life horrors he survived.
