Free Activities For The Christmas School Holidays
Unlike the summer holidays, this period is a lot shorter, with kids often getting two or three weeks off. Also unlike the summer holidays the weather may not be as kind, so instead of engaging in plenty of outdoor activities, you’ll have to think of a few more things to do inside or around the home during the Christmas break. Whether you’re just looking after your own children, or your helping out a friend or family member whilst they get their own festive plans up to scratch, there are many different free activities that kids can get involved in over the winter holidays. Here are some examples: Make Gifts For a parent, there’s nothing better than receiving a handmade gift from a loved one, especially from one of your children. Not only that, but kids love to make things, and so it’s a perfect way to keep them busy. You could literally make anything from clay models to crafts and even cards. Make and Put Up Christmas Decorations As well as making gifts, you could also make Christmas decorations, or other types of decorations that could go around the home. Paper chains are an excellent start for youngsters, but you could also get them to make festive logs or small nativity scenes, which will also educate them about the true meaning of this time of year. Another activity in itself would be to put up the decorations or decorate the Christmas tree. Children love to be part of this as it’s fun, exciting and creative. Get them engaged with the festive fun by letting them decorate parts of the tree, or help with putting up decorations around the home. Go to Local Events Your local council, schools and activity clubs will all be doing things over this festive period. Whether its nativity plays, carol singing or any other types of festive meet-ups, they’re a perfect solution to staying inside if you and your kids are particularly bored. Bake No matter what time of year, children love to get involved in baking and making food. Why not use this time of year and let them make something festive? Cupcakes with frosty icing and other toppings to emulate the snow or Christmas shaped cookies like Christmas trees or snowmen are a good start. They’ll learn valuable cooking skills and it’ll get them excited for when Santa arrives. Watch Christmas Films Okay, so you don’t always have to keep them active and engaged with little projects, but another great one is to watch your favourite Christmas movies. Anything like children’s films, comedy, action, adventure or even Christmas classics no matter how old or new. Your kids will also find something that they will love to watch, and if you’re struggling for ideas, or you’re simply too busy to be doing other things, then this is a perfect solution. Winter Sports Whether you want to play sports or games indoors or outdoors is really up to you, and the weather. There are indoor ice rinks, or you can go for indoor sports such as football, swimming, badminton or table tennis. For more festive sports though, get yourself outside and take advantage of the snow (If it’s fallen), that’s where most fun is to be had. Go Shopping Okay, so you’re probably thinking that this is the last thing you’ll want to do with your kids. The shops are busy, it’s cold and you don’t want to do your Christmas shopping having to traipse them around. Well you don’t have to. When you go shopping with your kids, make sure it’s for them to get their presents. If you go to Christmas markets or festive streets, it’ll make it more enjoyable and give the shopping trip more dynamism. Admire the Christmas tree, the lights and get yourselves hot chocolates or warm festive food to make the experience all the more Christmassy.
