Research has proven that most people don't purchase a product the first time they start their initial search. It can take them up to twelve times over a course of a few weeks to actually make their purchase. This is what's called the "interest" phase. They start out with a very broad search term and over time will start narrowing that down.

Take the weight loss market for instance. When people are searching for ways to lose weight they will start with the search term "weight loss". They soon get frustrated because there is so much information when using this phrase and they don't usually find what they are searching for. Over a period of time they will start narrowing down trying to find the solution to whatever problem they happen to have. For instance they might finally starting using the keywords "how do I lose weight fast" or "I need to drop ten pounds in a month".

Once their search is narrowed down and they finally start coming across results they then move into the "buying" phase. Google has a free keyword tool that you can use for this purpose. As an example, we'll use a broad search phrase like "weight loss". Then Google will give you other terms people are searching for and that's where you start narrowing down your search. Locate around 100 keywords to start with having at least two or more words. You can download these keywords to a spreadsheet because you will need to work off this initial list.

It's a tedious process but a necessary one in order to locate the right keywords that will get you in front of your target audience. There are of course paid keyword tools that will drastically cut down this process but you will still have to do the work when it comes to checking out your competition. You will still need to see how much competition those particular keywords are getting.
