Free Domain Names May Be A Serious Mistake!

The reason I get the call is that the client wants to move his website to another hosting provider for one reason or another. It could be poor support, rate increase, or unavailable ability that they now want to install. But there problem is that they don’t actually own their domain name, the hosting company does since they registered it.

Most webhosting companies will offer to sell the domain to the website owner for some ridiculous price. And the issue is that there is no way to stop this type of event from occurring if the website owner does not have the domain registration under thier control.

Another frequent problem is that for whatever reason the hosting provider company that gave you the no cost domain registration forgets to renew your domain name. This is even a larger problem since you might lose that domain name forever. Best case is you get to deal with a company that looks for expired domains and jumps on them so they can offer to sell it back for a huge cost. And trust me when I tell you they will charge you an far more than regular registration to get your domain name back.

Free can frequently turn out to be much more than no cost. Since most widely used domain extensions (.com, .org, .net) are pretty cheap to register (anywhere from $10-$12 per year depending on the extension) you really aren’t saving that much and the possible problems could cost much more.
