It was Lincoln’s leadership, his commitment to values and his strong moral fiber that made it possible for America to find its way through that fighting and then to begin the healing course that would eventually lead the nation back to harmony once again. Lincoln’s term of service from 1860 until his passing away was one of considerable challenge. If he only had the problem of dealing with the attempt by the south to succeed from the union and his ability to keep those states as part of the American national territory, he would be lauded as a great American indeed.
Lincoln had potency by turning enemies into associates. He selected talented figures, even from opposing political parties so he would not become complacent and would not suffer from group think.
What Lincoln will be remembered for mainly was his role in the ending of slavery.
It was not a position that came without cost. The civil war was one of the bloodiest and costliest in the nation’s record if for no other reason than all casualties; on both sides were losses of America. It would take many decades for the negative effects of that horrible war to be repaired. The division between north and south continued for decades and is still a part of our nationwide personality in this country.
Small wonder why multitudes of people flock to the Lincoln cenotaph in washington each year. His face in mount Rushmore is well deserved.
