Free Website Analytics
There are other free website analytics systems out there, often provided as part of your web hosting package but to be honest none are as good as Google Analytics. To use Google Analytics you need to register for a free account and then tell it the url of the website you want to monitor. You are given a piece of code containing a unique number. This code is pasted into the template that your websites uses or if you are fortunate enough to be using Wordpress you can just enter the unique number and it's all done. The home page of Google Analytics will list all the websites that you are currently tracking. You can then click on each one to analyse the information in more detail. At first glance the level of information available can seem overwhelming but the key is to not try to take it all in, in one go. Initially the most important factor that you will see is Site Usage or how many visitors your website has received. You can easily see if this is improving or not. You can also see where your visitors are coming from geographically. If you click on traffic sources in the menu you get a more detailed report which tells you whether your visitors came from a referring site (one that links to yours) or whether they came via a search engine or from directly keying in your website address. The number of visitors from Search Engines is of great interest as this indicates how well your website is performing for keywords and phrases. You can keep drilling down through the data but the most important factors are 'how many visitors' and 'where from' Website traffic is the sole most important factor in the success of your website. You need to apply every possible technique that you can, to draw these visitors in. Analytics can show you the results of your efforts but can't in itself do anything to increase that traffic. To increase your visitor numbers you need two things. Lots of great content and as many links pointing to your site as you can possibly get. Content brings in visitors who find your website in the search engine rankings but you need links to improve those rankings and to also bring more visitors in.
