Friend’s Houses
Mary, my friend with the collection of animals and birds, her house is open and friendly, if sometimes a little untidy. Whenever the children find a stray animal in the neighborhood, this is the place they take the unfortunate animal. The animal won’t stay unfortunate for long though, because Mary will first try and find out who the animal’s rightful owner is, but if she can’t find the owner, the animal gets a place in her little “zoo”, along with all the assortment of animals she already has. There are parrots, budgies, canaries, hamsters, dogs, cats and rabbits. She just puts her foot down when it comes to lizards and snakes. The animals take up a lot of her time, but she loves it and wouldn’t want it any other way. Mary’s children has long since been raised and long out of the house, and her husband just shakes his head and let Mary have her own way. Don’t think to find one matching piece of furniture in Mary’s house; it is an eclectic collection, just the same as her animals. The animals may roam free in her house, but her bedroom is off limits. She says even she deserves a place without them intruding. Most of her weekly shopping, is for the animals. If her husband doesn’t buy groceries and cleaning material for the house, they will just go without. On the other hand, Carol is painfully neat. One is too scared to cough in her house. You sit on the very verge of your seat, too scared to wrinkle her immaculate lounge suit. Years ago, she still allowed people to smoke in her house, but the minute you put out your cigarette, she’d grab the ashtray, rush off to the kitchen, throw out the ash and the stub, then meticulously wash and clean the ashtray, before she’d bring in back. Made the smokers scared to light up there! And when she serves you tea or coffee, you better hold on to your cup, because the minute you ut it down to look for something in your purse or to let it just stand there for a bit, she’d grab the cup, which will receive the same attention as the used ashtray a while ago. For all her meticulousness, Carol is actually a friendly soul. She can talk on just about any subject you can think of and her general knowledge is legendary. Then there is Dorothy. She hates it when people call her Dotty, but some still do. Dorothy’s house looks like the inside of a cathedral or a church. Not because it is huge and spacious inside, but because of all the candles she always burn. There are ordinary candles, big fat and round ones, tall and bold ones, scented candles, little dinky sized candles and just about any size and color you can imagine. There is always a fragrance of candles just blown out in her house, that slightly waxy smell that is left after a candle is snuffed out. Everybody always know what to get Dorothy for a gift, she makes no secret of the fact that she adores burning her candles.
