From Distress To De-stress: What Meditation Can Do

Technology and health – how are they connected? Have you ever noticed that as the world becomes more technologically advanced, more and more people are becoming sick? Well, yes, technology has also enabled scientists to find solutions, antidotes, medicines to more diseases, but have you ever stopped to think about what could this world have been if vacuum tubes were not invented? Or car engines? Or computers? Have you ever wondered why
people become sick just because of too much work or too many problems?

In a world where everything seems to be fast-paced - flow of information, money transfer, speed-dialing, pizza deliveries, office work, even dating – it’s so difficult not to be stressed. If you just lived a simple life in a farm or attended a simple school in rural areas, you probably have a low stress level. Many people will wish a life of not having seven formal laboratory reports due at the end of each week. Or an infinite number of phone calls to answer, emails to send, or meetings to attend. Stress has invaded its way into human life, becoming like a disease that should be treated professionally.

Having all this technology is good, but it makes us a little crazy sometimes, and that craziness is not helping our health. Not that we are all turning loony or psychotic, it’s just that having all these things to deal with is already stretching the human mind to its extreme limits. There should be something done about the stress that the body experiences from day to day.

Stress

Stress is described as the state in which a person’s emotional, psychological, mental, and physical equilibrium is disturbed once it is subjected to a stressor. Stressors can be anything: it may be the death of a loved one or a favorite pet, losing a job, getting divorced, arguments with your child or spouse, etc. Those are the stressors that give negative effects. There are good stressors too, which includes getting a pay raise, marrying the man/woman of your dreams, getting a good grade, achieving that position in your company that you have been eyeing on for so long, etc. Don’t think too negatively about stress, it has its good effects too. That is, if it is in moderation. Too little or too much stress is considered unhealthy.

Unhealthy Stress: Causes, Symptoms, and Effects

As said earlier, stress can be caused by many things, many of which are events in our lives that are either tragic or happy, or shocking. Deaths, separations, and accidents are just some of those which cause stress. Manifestations of stress include sudden weight gain or loss, dizziness, low self-esteem, a short temper, and irritability. If you’d choose to continue to wear yourself out and not attempt to de-stress, your mind and body will have to take the consequences. Some illnesses were discovered to be caused by stress, such as menstrual cramps, cardiac diseases, and weakening of the muscles. If not caused by stress, they were either reactivated or worsened by it.

meditation: How to de-stress

Many stress-reducing pills were made and some of them are quite effective, but there is a stress-relieving “medication” that is foolproof – meditation. Meditation, aside from not having any side effects, is also free and available everywhere. One does not really have to join a meditation class for you to meditate and you do not have to belong to any religion in order for you to master it. You can practice it anywhere, everywhere, whenever you want to. Simple meditation techniques are breathing and concentration on an object. The popular ones include Yoga and Tai Chi. You can learn more about this practice by checking it out online.
