You could even pick slightly different routes for the more experienced and straight terrain for the families.
Pets Parade
While not exactly a sport sweeping the nation, this is bound to be a popular active fundraising activity. Post some signs and get owners with their pets to go for a walk in the park. Charge a little for admission and offer little prizes for the best behaved or most exotic pet. People love to come together with their pets, it would not cost much and if it was well run, the crowds could grow weekly. You could advertise this activity in veterinary offices and pet stores, both would be willing to help you out.
Swimming
