Furnishing Your Nursery
First you will need a crib. Your child’s safety and comfort should come first. Then you can decide about different styles and colors based on your budget. The slats should be spaced so as to avoid getting your baby’s hands and feet stuck, the sides should be of adequate height to prevent your baby from climbing out, and you must choose a mattress with your baby’s health and safety in mind. There are many different features that can come on a crib so you need to decide what will work best for you. For example, do you want one with drop down sides or one that is stationary? Do you want a crib that has a changing table attached to it or not? You will also need a dresser to hold your baby’s clothes. There are many different types of dressers, so you need to decide what will work for you. Do you want one that has a changing table with it, or a tall dresser, or maybe a short long dresser? If you get one without a changing table, you will need to get a changing table by itself. A diaper pail is nice to have too, but it is not necessary. There are a few different styles out there, so just choose the one that you like and is easy to use. I suggest getting one that uses regular kitchen bags, instead of one that requires you to buy bags separately. That way you’re not spending any extra money. A rocking chair or glider is something that I think no nursery should be without. With all those late night feedings, you will appreciate a comfortable place to feed your baby. Feeding your baby is a wonderful time for you to bond. You’re so close to one another; looking into each other’s eyes is such an incredible feeling. A mobile above the crib is also a great thing to have. Not only will your baby love it, but the visual stimulation of a moving, colorful mobile helps your baby’s cognitive development. There are many different mobiles that you can buy; I suggest getting one that goes with your theme or look of the room. The last thing that I think should go in a nursery is a bookcase. It may seem early for the bookcase, but it really isn’t too early to start building your child’s library of children’s books. The sooner children are exposed to books, the sooner the wide world of reading will open up for them. These are just the basic furnishings for a nursery. There are many different themes, styles, and colors to choose from. It will all depend on what you and your family decide upon and on your budget.
