Gcse Coursework Writing At Home Is Scrapped From 2009!!!

Customary GCSE coursework is to be scrapped for most academic subjects according to a report by exam watchdogs.

From 2009, it will be substituted by what is being entitled as controlled assessment, where students will do assignments under control in class only. The changes came because of the raising concerns about students cheating by copying from the internet or getting help from parents.

The QCA says students doing supervised assignments in class may work on their own or in groups, but they will be watched by a teacher and access to books, the internet and other sources of information will be controlled.

These changes will be applied all across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Science coursework will not be affected. This is because science GCSE coursework altered previous year and much of the coursework is already done in school.

These changes will have an effect on nine subjects, including English literature, geography and history.

A QCA report published last autumn said GSCE coursework writing assignments had become less valid. Two-thirds of teachers surveyed for the study had said they did not think coursework was convincing and dependable.

Discussions are going on about what sort of supervision there should be for this work, ranging from direct to loose. There will also be developments to the way coursework writing assignment is set and marked. At present teachers in each school design the coursework and score it, and outside moderators check samples of results across the country.

In future the exam boards will set the coursework as well as the exams. Teachers will carry on to mark that work, but the regulators say once coursework is more updated, it will be easier to judge effectively.

Controlled assessments will boost public confidence in the GCSE and permit the incorporation of new sources of data and information, including the internet, under supervision.

A review of coursework was long past due, for example the drawing down of information from the internet and parents’ assisting, but out-and-out cheating was rare.
