Gps Buying Guide

First you will need to decide how your GPS will be used. Units are manufactured that are specially designed to be used in specific types of vehicles. Even some smart phones are GPS compatible so you can always know where you are. You may need to purchase a GPS receiver for you smart phone to enable this GPS capability. There are also models available for outdoor enthusiasts - even for the golf course!

For vehicles you have the choice of buying either an in-dash or a portable model. An in-dash system is designed to be permanently set up in your car, truck, or boat. A portable system, however, can easily be transferred from one place to another. In-dash systems are generally more pricey but also have greater screen space than portable models. Portable GPS units can have more features while being less expensive than permanently mounted GPS units. Given their greater flexibility and lower price, a portable GPS may be ideal for your needs.

Next you'll need to choose what variety of maps you'd like for your GPS. Most GPS models will come with maps for the U.S. and many will also have maps for the rest of North America. These maps will usually include detailed street and highway maps that note countless points of interest like food, hotels, motels, gas stations, ATMs, and local attractions. Additional maps are often available for an extra fee.

All GPS models have the basic capability of finding your location on a map. However, modern units offers many other capabilities so you'll need to choose what extra options you'd like for your GPS. Ever arrive late to a meeting with an important client due to bad traffic? Some units offer local traffic conditions that can help you avoid traffic and pick the quickest roads. News, local movie times, and local gas prices are also available options on some units. Text-to-speech is a feature where a computer generated voice will talk the directions out loud and keep you well apprised of the correct way. Many models offer bluetooth so you can take cell phone calls (with caller details displaying on your GPS) through your GPS. You can also find models with features like MP3 and photo display. Many people find such features to be very useful and worth the extra cost.
