Garage Doors- A Splendid Way To Take Care Of The Home
Though there may be many brands, overhead garage doors are of just two categories. The first variety consists of a single piece door which can be slid up and down; when they slide up the horizontal panels which are linked together by hinges, fold up and slide along the light panel while there is a second variation which is a more complex version of the first one. Whichever garage door you have, it requires proper care and regular maintenance. Looking at the hinges, rollers and brackets along with the other basic hardware should be done each time you service your garage door. Make sure that all holding screws and bolts are tight. A loose nut with an eroded threading will not get screwed properly and a carriage bolt should be its replacement. Put the carriage bolt inside the door by creating a small hole and secure it by sealing it with a nut and washer. The next step is inspecting the door rollers for proper functioning and this should be followed with the inspection of the alignment and condition of the spindles. Replacement of a roller becomes necessary if it has broken or bent in any way. Lubricate the spindles and roller bearings twice a year with lightweight oil and also squirt a few drops of oil on the door hinge pins. All overhead doors travel in their upward path along metal tracks. One piece doors have two tracks hanging from the ceiling joists. Section doors have similar tracks with the only difference that these curve downwards into vertical tracks. Rollers are attached along the door so that it moves smoothly along the tracks. Tracks should be level or slightly pitched toward the back of the garage, plumbed straight, and free of dirt and debris. The door may get jammed if there is any irregularity in the track as the rollers may get stuck. The rollers may get jammed and not move properly due to dirt or debris. The horizontal members should be fixed in a straight line and the vertical section should be plumbed. The parallelism of the tracks should be ensured by spacing them out equally. If the alignment of the tracks isn't proper, they should be slightly loosened using a wrench and tapped back into place. After you are satisfied with the position of the bracket, screw it tightly. The next step is to clean the dirt off the tracks and to spray some silicone lubricant on it. Strong cables can be used to attach springs to the underside of the door. They assist the operator in lifting and closing the door. The spring can manage to hold the door stationary at a height of nearly three feet from the ground if the cables and hinges are all in place. If it is pushed beyond the height of three feet, the door will slowly slide upwards on its own. To readjust the spring, it is important to make sure the lubrication of the other components is done properly. The S hook which is at the end of the braided cable is what is responsible for all adjustments made to the tension spring. Located on either side of the door, the hook sits into any of the series of holes inside a bracket. You need to raise the door to certain height and clamp it in place. The adjustments on both sides of the door, on both the door cables should be balanced. Torsion springs are adjusted by inserting an iron bar into a slot at the end of the spring, then twisting it to tighten an internal ratchet mechanism. This operation isn't very safe due to the excessive tension in the spring. You are advised to let a professional handle this.
