Garage Sale

What is it that makes the male of the human species go whirr round to every garage sale they know of?

I know when I do spring cleaning, I throw stuff out. But I don’t invite the neighborhood to come and sniff around and buy the stuff, no I throw the stuff out. But it seems that one man’s scrap, is another man’s treasure.

I shouldn’t talk so loudly really, because I’ve bought stuff from a garage sale as well. It is not always just stuff from the garage that get sold, sometimes old crockery, paintings, ornaments, jewelry and even clothing gets sold with whatever they want to get rid of. Then in reality, it becomes more of a “yard sale” than a “garage sale”. And the whole thing develops into an event, rather than a sale. People are friendly and jovial and some people that you only see around but don’t actually know, come and make friends.

I’ve bought a beautiful silver teapot set once at such a garage sale. The thing was black with tarnish and in serious need of some tender care and attention. It had a little sugar pot as well as a creamer and tea strainer. You don’t see those around much these days. It is now my proud and joy in my new kitchen, something very old worldly in my very new state of the art kitchen. I’ve even used it on occasion, although I don’t happen to get many of those. It is just a lovely conversation piece and beautiful to look at. I take care of it most lovingly. I wish I knew more of its heritage.

Back to men and the garage sales. My man always comes home with some odd thing out of these garage sales, just to get stashed in turn in his garage. I always ask why he buys stuff that he have no need for, he usually replies that he doesn’t have a need for them now, but the time will come when he would need it and then he would not have to go looking for it. His garage is worth having a garage sale made out of, I can assure you that.

When we move one day, I don’t want to be the one packing all those things. Or unpacking them either!

I’ve been having some difficulty with our garage door lately. Seems as though the thing goes wonky whenever it sees me approach. I’ve started to develop a complex about the whole thing. My husband just never gets time to take a look at it. I’ve always said that I’d get the handyman that my friend has used, but I know that this would upset my husband. I’ll just have to wait for him to fix it.

It is Saturday, and as is our habit, my friend and I get together for our weekly catching up session. This time at my house. While we are having coffee and cheesecake, we hear my husband hammering away in the garage. After a while, he comes in to report that the faulty garage door has been fixed with some garage door parts. I asked him how much it cost him, and he replied: “Nothing. I used the garage door parts I’ve bought from someone’s garage sale long ago.”
