Gavin And Stacey - Could It Become A Classic British Sitcom?
Well I personally think it's really starting to become a mainstream sitcom that the general British audience is starting to really warm to. It used to be hidden away on BBC3 but now it's a top BBC1 show. It's one of those shows that as soon as you watch an episode you instantly become hooked. I discovered it late on myself but having heard other people rave about it, I watched an episode and thought it was brilliant. The characters are so likeable and instantly recognisable. You've got Gavin and his family who are from Essex, England, and you've got Stacey and her family who are from Barry, South Wales, plus Smithy and Nessa of course who are their best friends, and it's when these two clans come together and interact that we get real top quality comedy. Although the show is titled Gavin and Stacey, it's really the supporting characters of Smithy, Nessa, and my own favourite character Bryn, who really steal the show. The storylines are quite slow-paced and take time to develop but the comedy scenes and the dialogue between all the characters are excellent, and are the main reasons why I like this show so much. It's not just a gag fest though. There are really quite emotional and dramatic scenes at times, and it's these believable stories that unwind over several episodes combined with classic comedy moments that make Gavin And Stacey a truly great sitcom. This is not your traditional British sitcom. There are no studios or laughter tracks and most of the scenes appear to be filmed on location which only adds to the realism of this show. Overall it may not yet be a household favourite but I think it's only a matter of time before it becomes a mainstream hit, particularly as we have recently heard that a third series is currently being planned.
