Gender Discrimination On Dress Codes

Discrimination has long been an issue in the society, and it has brought so much headaches to both the civilians and authorities. For many times, clothing or dress codes have been a root and result of gender discrimination. It’s also been a cause of discomfort, keeping them from freely moving while accomplishing demanding tasks, such as those in hospital. In the recent TUC conference, a health issue regarding the need for women to wear of high heels while at work arose. Unions say women must be allowed to wear sensible shoes in the workplace. Although, this is not an issue in the health care industry, workers may have to consider this as a matter with great importance.

More comfortable footwear are allowed in clinics and hospitals today. In fact, different athletic shoes, clogs, rubber shoes and other similar comfy shoes are now available in the market. The reason is to give them utmost comfort in order for them to provide the best health care the patients need. This is also the reason why in most hospitals female employees are no longer required to wear nurse skirts or dresses. They can wear what men wear. Although, there are no specific rules prohibiting men from wearing women’s medical uniforms, it’s unlikely for them to cross-dress. And perhaps, it’s another issue that employees and administrations should face.

Nursing uniforms in unisex support the claim of equality among men and women in the health care industry. Scrub pants and scrub tops in just one design can be worn by both the employees of both genders. The drawstring scrub pants, for instance, were cut to suit the hips, buttocks, and legs of either men or women. Flare scrub pants were also designed to look just right on all nurses, doctors, dentists, veterinarians, or anyone in the health care industry. Cargo pants, which originally are designed for men, are now tailored to also suit women. As to scrub tops, white, solid-color, and even printed ones can be worn by all health care workers.

Besides unisex scrub pants and tops, physicians, vets and nurses may also share the same designs of lab coats and warm-up jackets. And if they choose to look more masculine or more feminine, medical scrubs styled to cater on a specific gender are available as well. They are even provided by popular manufacturers such as Adar, Barco, Cherokee, Dickies, Landau, and Urbane.
