Georgia Automotive Recyclers Provide Valuable Community Service

When most people think of auto recyclers the first thing that may come to mind are piles of junk cars everywhere. This may be true sometimes but there is so much more to an auto recycling facility than just the junk cars.

These facilities provided valuable services to the communities in which they are located. If there were no automotive recyclers, it would become apparent very quickly. Without the important functions they perform, what would happen to all the vehicles that were no longer functional? What would happen to all the hazardous materials that each vehicle contains? Side roads, neighborhoods and vacant lots would quickly start to fill up with these junk cars. Landfills that were never meant to handle junk cars would quickly become clogged up as well. In addition, as these vehicles sit abandoned, the hazardous materials they contain would eventually find their way in to groundwater, lakes and streams. Aside from being an eyesore, abandoned vehicles pose a threat to the environment.

Automotive recyclers in the state of Georgia ensure that none of these things occurs. The auto recycling facilities take in hundreds of thousands of inoperable vehicles every year. These facilities dismantle vehicles, handle the hazardous materials contained in them and recycle as much as 85% of the vehicle. These licensed recycling facilities employ skilled technicians trained in the latest methods of handling the hazardous materials specific to the automotive industry. They are regularly inspected by local and federal environmental agencies. Most of these facilities also employ the latest technologies from computer equipment to handle inventory to the machinery used to move the vehicles. Millions of dollars have been invested both in Georgia and nationwide to ensure environmental compliance. Moreover, since 1997, automotive recyclers have recovered enough steel from salvaged vehicles to produce 13 million new ones. This incredible achievement preserves non-renewable resources such as iron and aluminum deposits.

By dismantling and removing all of the parts that are still in good working condition, the metal required to make new parts is also preserved. It also conserves the energy that is required to manufacture new parts.

Beyond the conservation of space, mineral reserves and energy, automotive recyclers assist consumers in saving money as well. When a vehicle needs to be repaired, there are only two options: purchase a new part from a dealership or purchase a quality used OEM part from a salvage yard. Anyone who has ever purchased a new part is already aware of how expensive these can be. What many might not know is that the same part came usually be purchased from an automotive recycler for a fraction of the cost. In addition, used parts purchased from licensed auto recyclers normally have years and many miles of use left on them and are normally available with a warranty. Many mechanics today are quite willing to consider utilizing used parts in the repair of a vehicle. This is usually even more so the case if you offer to do the legwork yourself. So next time you pass a junk yard, remember there is more to it than meets the eye.
