Georgia’s Newest National Park Land
The new park land was once part of an historic 300 acre farmstead. The acreage was part of a parcel that had been slated for residential development. The Trust for Public Land was able to purchase the 22 acres and then sold them to the National Park Service. The land is located at the point where historic Rogers Bridge crosses the Chattahoochee River. The bridge, which is no longer in use, was built in the early 20th century. Its design is a rare surviving example of a Pennsylvania Design pin connected metal truss bridge, and it is the largest single span bridge in the state. The historical design significance of Rogers Bridge makes it eligible for submission to the National Register of Historic Places. Although there has been some development on both sides of the river near this area, the new unit of park land is actually located along a quiet and scenic portion of the river. The National Park Service plans to develop some trails in the new green space. An abundance of wildlife may be seen along this area of the river. More than 200 species of birds make this area their home, including Canada geese and the great blue heron. Rabbits, foxes, and white tailed deer may be seen in the wooded areas near the riverbanks. Anglers love to fish the cold waters for trout, catfish, and bass. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources stocks the river. Other popular activities in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area include canoeing, rafting, and kayaking. This new section of National Park land is a welcome addition in the greater Atlanta area. It will provide new opportunities for park users to escape the urban noise and traffic to enjoy nature and outdoor recreation.
